The Best Idea Ever

College sports should emulate the European soccer pyramid.  You know, where the best teams rise to the top and the worst teams are relegated to the next tier?  Built into this, we can have a 16-team playoff to determine a real champion.  Over time, I will extrapolate, but here are some quick thoughts.

  • Get rid of D1 (FBS and FCS), D2, and D3.  All of the schools are in one pool.
  • Divide the country into eight fixed regions.  You can't jump regions without physically moving the school.
  • Create five tiers across the field of teams.  Good teams move up to a higher tier, bad teams go down to a lower tier.  Currently, there are four and it's really difficult to move between tiers.
  • The bottom two tiers are roughly analogous to D2 and D3.  The middle tier is roughly FCS.  The top two tiers are FBS.
  • The second tier is the highest regional tier.  The top tier is an 8-team, national superconference made up from the previous season's regional champions
  • The first round of the playoffs is the champion of Tier 2 against their Top Tier counterpart.  Round one decides what teams will be in the superconference for the next season.
